Why Is Owning a Digital Agency Hard AF?

December 10, 2021

When Ken and I decided to launch TCC I would say we were still pretty naive about the whole thing, even though I had already started 5 other small businesses before that…I was still green in what THIS one was going to take to make successful.

In the beginning, I was a cold calling queen, I would literally call anyone and everyone that I thought could use our services.  I had a love/hate relationship with it.

I loved connecting with people, but f*cking hated the ‘cold’ part of the calling.

So, why is starting an agency hard AF?

  1. It’s competitive.  Lots of people saying lots of things, it can feel like you’re lost in a sea of same same.
  2. It takes a strong knowledge base to be able to offer digital marketing services
  3. There are a million services to offer, which do you choose? Why do you choose it?
  4. Clients sometimes expect actual miracles from you or your company.
  5. Our industry moves lightning fast…but also, not a lot actually changes, we just change what we call things, think ‘email marketing’ now called ‘inbound’…clever move on Hubspots part;).

A lot of the parts of ownership can seem totally overwhelming, to the point of total burnout right?

But we still do it, we still work our asses off to build something we are proud of, something that will build a legacy.

So what do we do with the overwhelm?

Here are a couple things that will help:

  1. Join groups of other agency owners, but groups that talk about the ups and downs, not just the best SEO strategies.
  2. Find a coach or mentor who’s been there, someone who gets it
  3. Get comfortable being vulnerable, it’s literally the only way to get help when things get tough.
  4. Stop bullshitting yourself and be honest about what’s working and what isn’t.
  5. Take a break, put the phone down and leave it for a day.  Your business won’t fall apart. I promise:).
  6. Give yourself grace, you are doing hard things, helping people with their business is really important, realize you are still human:).

I hope this gave you some perspective on the fact that we all feel this way, it’s not just you and it’s not just me!  Let's be open about it so we can help one another.

Big love,

Cara
